In a break from the norm we present a very special Sunday evening gig this January, presenting the outrageously talented Nicolas Jaar. At the age of just seventeen he was described by our pal Seth Troxler as "one of the most talented minds dance music is about to see develop", and four years on, it's clear to see why.

Born in NYC, but raised in Santiago de Chile, Nico started to make organic electronic music in 2004. He came back to New York for his teenage years, and his first release soon followed in 2007; “The Student EP” on local label Wolf and Lamb. The worldwide scene took immediate notice of the young man's precocious skills, and years on he has gigged at some of the coolest venues in the world, from Club Der Visionaire to Mutek, from The Marcy Hotel to Fabric.

Nico's music is frighteningly original and refuses easy categorization. The American may be closely associated with Wolf + Lamb, but the music he makes has only a tangential relationship with house or techno, and lends more influence from Ethiopian Jazz than German or American electronica. He often takes his live club sets down to a jarringly slow 70bpm, interested as he is, in creating atmosphere and emotional resonance rather than physically moving the crowd. His live sets give true definition to the term, combing Ableton, a selection of Analogue gear and live 'Jonny Cash-esque' vocals sung through an old vintage mic. Sounds good? RA certainly think so, voting it the second best Live performance in the world in 2010.

One of the most highly anticipated albums of 2011, 'Space Is Only Noise' set to be released in early 2011 on eclectic French label Circus Company. His Louche debut will be one of many European gigs supporting the release over the winter months.

A grounded individual, Nico opted to not let things get carried away, but finish his schooling first, and amazingly he is still studying a Comparative Literature degree at Brown University in Rhode Island. Clearly the guy is a musician apart, and this evening promises to be very special. We, and the rest of Leeds can't wait to witness the most acclaimed new artists in electronic music perform his Chilean-flavored, hip-hop infected live act.
