To kick start 2011 we welcome back one of our standout guests from last year; Dinky, who will be showcasing the sounds and vibes of her Berlin based imprint Horizontal. Performing alongside the talented and charming Chilean will be Matthew Styles, who is without doubt one of the most underrated DJ's going, as you will find out on the 15th, as he comes to Leeds for his Louche debut.
Ever since our joint party with System at Nation of Shopkeepers last May, we've been gagging to bring Dinky to Mint Club. Her set that day was mind-blowingly stylish; her deep Latino rhythms and smooth techno, perfectly capturing the mood of the Bank Holiday.
A promoters favorite the world over, she trots the globe playing underground parties to open air festivals every weekend. She is just as popular at home in Berlin as she is everywhere else; regularly appearing all over town, from Arena Club to Horst to her residency at the legendary Panorama Bar. Since we last saw her she has released music on Circle Music, Cocoon and Ostgut Ton's celebrated 5th birthday sampler, as well as an EP on her own label Horizontal.
Horizontal, founded in 2005 was created by Dinky as a means to put out her own material quickly. Irritated by other labels release turn-around, she set up the label so she could put out music at the peak of it's freshness. The imprint has since grown, and now features not just releases by the label owner, but also EPs by the likes of Anthony Collins, Andres Bucci, and of course, Matthew Styles. With plays from the scene's most respected artists Horizontal is a hugely significant label in modern house music, and will provide an excellent soundtrack to an evening in Mint Club.
It was at the turn of the millennium when things started to happen for Matthew Styles, when he made a pivotal move to London. Once living in the capital he swiftly purchased an Akai MPC sampler, and met Damian Lazarus, and it was these two events that shaped Matthew's next eleven years. In 2003 he took on an A&R role at Lazarus' Crosstown Rebels, and for the next six years he was responsible for bringing new artists such as Minilogue and Pier Bucci to the worlds attention. Parallel to working at the label Matthew honed his skills as a producer, quickly amassing an arsenal of studio gear preparing a debut 12 inch as a solo artist. Fast forward to the present and Matthew has tunes and remixes on NRK, Bar 25 and Bpitch, as well as several full EPs on tonight's label Horizontal. A highly respected DJ by all his peers, Styles never disappoints with his supreme DJ sets.
Expect these two to bring the smooth, deep house sounds of Berlin to The Mint Club, and be assured that this will be a night of excellent, forward thinking musical expression. A perfect way to begin a new year of Louche parties we're sure you'll agree.
