Whats On

Our annual Freshers Party is always the hit of the fortnight and this year will be no different!

With Diana Vickers, FIVE, Beatbullyz, a DJ Set from Preston (Ex-Ordinary Boys), and many more party anthem-fuelled DJ Set’s from the likes of Silver Hips and Boombox DJ’s, as well as much more crazy goings-on, this is a night NOT TO BE MISSED!

What better way to start your first week proper of University than the Freshers' Party 2010? Leeds Met Students Union is taken over for the night with two stages full of music ranging from rock, pop, indie, dance to drum bass and dubstep. With plenty to dance to and lots more to keep you entertained as well as ridiculous drinks prices, get ready for the night of your life.

Check out who we have lined up for you to party to:

Diana Vickers (LIVE)

Diana Vickers was always the X Factee that didn’t quite fit in. The adjectives lent her by the judges in their sometimes brutal 10 second Saturday night summing-ups – ‘quirky’, ‘individual’, and ‘kooky’

With a wilful singing style Diana Vickers became known as the rebel in the pack of 2008’s X Factor hopefuls. Luckily, it wasn’t just the 10 million regular viewers that clocked her difference. In March 2009 she landed a deal with RCA Records, where she began work on her debut album; Songs from the Tainted Cherry Tree. Her debut single ‘Once’ shot straight to number one in the UK Singles charts as did her album, which has sold over 125,000 copies to date.

FIVE (LIVE)

Five were an English boyband put together in 1997 by the same team that formed the Spice Girls. The five members were Scott Robinson, Ritchie Neville, J Brown, Abz Love and Sean Conlon. Signed by Simon Cowell, they enjoyed great success worldwide, but particularly in the UK, parts of Europe and Asia, Russia, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand and the USA. They split up on 27 September 2001, after selling almost 20 million records.

But for one night only we bring to the euphoria of a late-nineties FIVE show to Leeds Met Students Union!! Scott and Abz from the original line-up will be here to blast through all of their classic songs including “If ya gettin’ down”, "Slam Dunk (Da Funk)" and "Everybody Get Up"!

Beatbullyz (LIVE)

When Radio 1's Big Weekend came to Swindon in 2009 there was one local band on everyone's lips. Beatbullyz have built up a large following in their hometown, consistently selling out 700 capacity venues.

The band had previously taken their energetic live show to the likes of Austria's Snowbombing festival, Rotterdam's Heineken Street Parade, and even Channel 4's Hollyoaks on which they performed their track 'Keys To Life' after being tipped as one of the best new live bands around by T4. In 2009 they were main support on Example’s UK tour. They are currently working on their debut album with Jim Eliot of Kish Mauve (Ladyhawke, Kylie Minogue) and Chris Baker of Mint Royale.

Preston (Ex-Ordinary Boys) (DJ SET)

Best remembered for his time fronting The Ordinary Boys, Preston is back with a difference. With The Ordinary Boys he had a string of top-ten hits in the UK Singles Chart. Their most famous song, Boys Will Be Boys, featured in the fifth Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. He also appeared in the reality television show Celebrity Big Brother in 2006, in which he finished fourth.

But now Preston has swapped the Big Brother Diary Room for spinning records as a DJ and, always at the cutting edge of culture and fashion, he is certainly in strong demand. Originally influenced by the mod revival and Britpop, Preston recently took a unique step from his roots and added an electro edge to his music, his can be found in his awesome DJ Set!

Silver Hips (DJ SET)

Silver Hips is a young and exuberant monthly club-night based at The HiFi Club in Leeds. They play a mix of Old School Hip Hop, Motown and Indie, book live bands and just have a whole lot of fun. Their club night has become a cult-classic but Silver Hips is also used as a name to promote other music events and to help divulge their interest in the wondrous music industry.

The infamous night can be found on the 'First Thursday of the Month' at the Hifi Club. Artists they have worked with to date include: good shoes, metronomy, is tropical, loose talk costs lives, la shark, dutch uncles, flash guns, video nasties, japanese voyeurs, hey sholay, fresh legs and many others.

And we here at Leeds Met Students Union are delighted to have them on board for a DJ Set!
